Saving Count Miklós Bánffy’s Transylvanian Home – Phase II of the Works

During the second phase of the conservation of Bánffy Castle in Bonțida (2025–2028), the restoration of the Court d’Honneur’s buildings will be completed, the Kitchen Building will be modernised, and works will continue in the Main Building as well.

The partial restoration of the Court d’Honneur – the carriage house and the stable – began in 2023. The carriage house has been successfully saved, and a training workshop combining traditional and modern elements has been established there. The comprehensive interior restoration of the stable is currently nearing completion. The developments will continue in Phase II, when the restoration of additional spaces and buildings of the Court d’Honneur will also be carried out.

The Kitchen Building underwent partial restoration already in 2001. It houses the kitchen, dining hall and student accommodation of the Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre. The building also functions as a cultural meeting point: it hosts the Cultural Café as well as the Experience Room, which offers an immersive exhibition inviting visitors on a virtual walk through the castle. However, the works have not yet been completed – further modernisation of the building is required, as well as the structural reinforcement of the completely ruined, leaning clock tower.

The Main Building is the largest and most impressive part of the castle ensemble. Its partial structural reinforcement and the restoration of the neo-Gothic wing took place between 2018 and 2022, when the interactive exhibition titled “Miklós Bánffy’s Force Fields”, dedicated to the castle’s last resident, was created. In Phase II, the restoration of the ground-floor rooms of the central and eastern wings, as well as of the vaulted cellar, will be carried out, further expanding the experiences available to visitors.
