Saving Count Miklós Bánffy’s Transylvanian Home – Phase I of the Works

The conservation works at Bánffy Castle in Bonțida are continuing (2024–2027). Within the current project, our goal is to complete the restoration of the Miklós Building, as well as to partially revive the Main Building and to restore its western wing.

The process of saving the Miklós Building began in 2002, when several interior spaces were made functional, housing a classroom for the theoretical lectures of the Built Heritage Conservation Training Centre operating in the castle, as well as two elegant suites and accommodation for up to ten students. Within the current project, the building will undergo a complete interior renewal, furnishing and exterior restoration.

The Main Building is the most impressive part of the castle ensemble. Its structural reinforcement and the partial restoration of the neo-Gothic western wing took place between 2018 and 2022. As a result, the exhibition titled “Miklós Bánffy’s Force Fields” opened on the ground floor, where visitors can learn more about the life and multifaceted activity of Count Miklós Bánffy. As a next step of the project, the restoration of the western wing will be completed, and the elegant Bánffy Suite will be created on the upper floor.

During this same development phase, the renewal of the central and eastern wings will also continue. On the upper storey, a modern, interactive, science-based non-formal educational and exhibition space will be created. This special venue will offer exciting programmes for schoolchildren while also providing an engaging and inspiring visitor experience for the general public.
