OR [21 August and 3 September 2017]“To dare is to lose one's footing momentarily. To not dare is to lose oneself.”Søren Kierkegaard, the solitary philosopher of the 19th century, in his work Either/Or, differentiates the aesthetic and moral stage of human existence. From this perspective, the aesthetic stage of existence also implies anxiety, despair, or futility, however, for the individual that opts to make a choice, “or” is not only a possibility, but a possibility to decide, to make up one’s mind: it is the first step after this crossroad, a step in an assumed direction. Through this decision the binary becomes singular. Like anything else that pertains to the human condition, this decision is also fallible, following which the individual becomes responsible for him or herself and for the decision taken. IF [11 and 24 September 2017]“If you can fill the unforgiving minuteWith sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it…”
The quote from the poem of Rudyard Kipling is compelling not from an aesthetic or moral viewpoint, but by its existential connotation. It presents an impasse or a crisis, which through the gesture of running denotes individual longing: the experience of complete freedom. The situation, as an answer to the immediate reality, may be interpreted as a reaction to a moment of crisis. The presumable, imagining a change, may be at the same time negation, relinquishment, fleeing, but also striving towards change whose outcome might be problematic: conditional.
